Celebrating Unity and Tradition: The Duan Wu Festival and Bak Zhong Distribution Campaign 2024

On Sunday, June 2nd, 2024, the Taman Bukit Community Hall, Melaka, buzzed with activity and excitement as community members gathered for the annual Duan Wu Festival and Bak Chang Distribution Campaign, celebrating the Duan Wu Festival 2024. Organized by YB Kerk Ayer Keroh, this event exemplified the spirit of togetherness and cultural heritage.

A Morning of Joyful Collaboration

Starting as early as 7:30 am, the community came together to prepare 1,500 Bak Zhong (also known as Zongzi) for distribution. The scene was a heartwarming display of teamwork and dedication, with volunteers of all ages participating in the preparation process. By 11:00 am, all the Bak Zhong were cooked and ready to be served to the community.

The event not only provided delicious food but also fostered a sense of unity and shared purpose. It was a joyous occasion that highlighted the importance of working together in peace and harmony.

A Glimpse into the History of Duan Wu Festival

The Duan Wu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, has a rich history that dates back over 2,000 years. It commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who, in despair over the corruption of his government, drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people, in an attempt to save him or at least recover his body, raced out in their boats and threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. This act of remembrance evolved into the Dragon Boat Festival and the tradition of making and eating Bak Zhong.

The Significance of the Duan Wu Festival

The Duan Wu Festival, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, is a time to honor Qu Yuan's spirit and celebrate Chinese cultural heritage. The festival is marked by dragon boat races, the eating of Bak Zhong, and various other festivities. It serves as a reminder of loyalty, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of the community.

Tips for Making Perfect Bak Zhong

Making Bak Zhong is an art that requires patience and skill. Here are a few tips for those who wish to try their hand at this traditional delicacy:

  1. Choose the Right Ingredients: Use glutinous rice, fresh bamboo leaves, and high-quality fillings such as pork, mushrooms, chestnuts, and salted egg yolks.
  2. Preparation of Bamboo Leaves: Soak the bamboo leaves overnight to soften them, and then boil them for a few minutes to ensure they are pliable and clean.
  3. Seasoning the Rice: Marinate the glutinous rice with soy sauce, oyster sauce, and other seasonings for enhanced flavor.
  4. Assembling the Bak Zhong: Carefully wrap the marinated rice and fillings in the bamboo leaves, ensuring they are tightly secured to prevent leakage during cooking.
  5. Cooking: Boil the wrapped Bak Zhong for several hours until fully cooked. The time may vary depending on the size and filling.

A Day of Celebration and Gratitude

The Bak Zhong Distribution Campaign was more than just a culinary event; it was a celebration of community spirit and cultural pride. We were honored to have a photography session with YB Kerk Ayer Keroh, YB Khoo, and representatives from various associations and donors. Their presence and contributions were greatly appreciated, making the event a resounding success.

As we reflect on this wonderful day, we are reminded of the joy and fulfillment that comes from working together in peace and harmony. Let us continue to celebrate our traditions and strengthen our community bonds in the years to come.

Ode to the Dragon Boat Festival

In the heart of summer's bloom,
When rivers gleam under the moon,
We gather to remember and to honor,
The legacy of Qu Yuan, a scholar.

Bamboo leaves in gentle hands,
Glutinous rice from fertile lands,
Wrapped with care, a family’s treasure,
Each Bak Zhong a token of pleasure.

Drums echo on the water's breast,
As dragon boats race with zest,
Oars slicing through the morning mist,
In a rhythmic dance, a joyous twist.

Colors bright, and spirits high,
Kites soaring in the sky,
The scent of incense, the sound of cheer,
Tradition's whisper, loud and clear.

A tale of loyalty and sorrow told,
In legends ancient and bold,
Yet in the present, it lives anew,
In every heart that beats true.

Families gather, hand in hand,
Together they work, together they stand,
In peace and joy, they find their way,
Celebrating this sacred day.

To the Dragon Boat Festival, we raise a toast,
To the culture and history we love the most,
In each Bak Zhong, a story we hold,
Of timeless values, brave and bold.

May this festival bring us close,
In bonds of love, we cherish most,
Rich in culture, steeped in grace,
In every heart, may it find its place.

A Mother's Love: The Tender Wings of the Owl

In the heart of the bustling city's glow,
Amidst the towering buildings' flow,
A tender scene unfolds, serene and bright,
A mother owl, her love alight.

With feathers soft and eyes so wise,
She tends to her young, under moonlit skies,
Her wings outstretched, a sheltering embrace,
Guiding her owlets with gentle grace.
I
n the midst of urban hustle and rush,
Her love for her young, a sacred hush,
Teaching them to fly, to climb, to soar,
A mother's love, an endless store.

With every flap, with every climb,
She whispers love, in rhythm and rhyme,
For in her heart, a love profound,
A bond unbroken, forever bound.

As cameras click and crowds draw near,
Her love shines bright, crystal clear,
A testament to the depths within,
A mother's love, a sacred hymn.

So let us pause, in awe and wonder,
At this scene, a love so tender,
For in the heart of the city's sprawl,
A mother's love, the greatest of all.

A Gracious Celebration: Embracing the Spirit of Eid al-Fitr with Joy and Abundance

As the radiant moonlight cast its gentle glow upon the earth, illuminating the night with its celestial beauty, a sense of anticipation and excitement filled the air. It was a night of celebration, a night of gratitude and joy, as we gathered together to mark the end of Ramadan and embrace the spirit of Eid al-Fitr, also known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari Raya Puasa in Malay or Bahasa Malaysia.

Magdelene, Chin Mei, Christine, Angie and Sylvia

After thirty days of fasting and spiritual reflection, Muslims around the world come together to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a festive occasion that symbolizes the breaking of the fast and the renewal of faith. It is a time for family and community, for feasting and fellowship, as we rejoice in the blessings of the past month and look forward to the journey ahead.

We were honored to be invited to attend the Chief Minister Aidilfitri Open house at his residence at Seri Bendahara, Ayer Keroh, at 7 pm. Accompanied by friends Christine Ho, Magdeline Leong, Sylvia Ong, and Sis Chin Mei, we embarked on a journey of celebration and camaraderie, eager to partake in the festivities that awaited us.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with warm smiles and heartfelt welcomes, as the spirit of Riang Ria Raya 2024 permeated the atmosphere. The Chief Minister's residence was adorned with vibrant decorations and colorful lights, setting the stage for an evening filled with joy and merriment.

       Satay and Ketupat

As we stepped into the grand open garden, we were immediately greeted by the tantalizing aroma of exquisite dishes that lined the buffet tables. English mutton steak, beef rendang, ketupat, satay chicken and beef – a feast fit for royalty awaited us, showcasing the rich and diverse culinary traditions of Malaysia.

           Local Cakes and desserts

The array of drinks available was equally impressive, offering something for every palate and preference. From hot coffee and hot tea to icy lemonade and icy green matcha, the options were endless, providing refreshing respite from the warm evening breeze.

But perhaps the most enticing sight of all was the dessert spread, a veritable paradise of sweet delights that beckoned to us with irresistible allure. Ice cream, cendol, and an assortment of traditional Malay desserts adorned the dessert table, tempting us with their decadent flavors and irresistible charm.

As we indulged in the culinary delights before us, laughter and conversation filled the air, as friends old and new came together to share in the joy of the occasion. It was a time of bonding and camaraderie, as we celebrated the bonds of friendship and the spirit of unity that brings us together as a community.

Throughout the evening, traditional Malay music filled the air, adding to the festive ambiance and inspiring guests to dance and celebrate with abandon. The sounds of laughter and music echoed through the air, a joyful symphony of celebration that reverberated into the night.

As the evening drew to a close, and the moon hung low in the sky, we gathered together once more to offer prayers of gratitude and thanksgiving for the blessings of the past month. It was a moment of reflection and reverence, as we expressed our gratitude for the opportunity to come together in fellowship and celebration.

As we bid farewell and made our way home, our hearts were full of gratitude and joy, knowing that we had been part of something truly special. The spirit of Eid al-Fitr had filled our hearts with warmth and love, reminding us of the beauty of community, the richness of tradition, and the boundless blessings that surround us each day.

As we look ahead to the journey that lies before us, may the spirit of Eid al-Fitr continue to inspire us, guiding us with its light and filling our hearts with hope and joy. Eid Mubarak to all, and may the blessings of this sacred occasion be with you always.

Exploring Ancient Wisdom: A Journey of Self-Discovery at Malaysian Han Studies, (MAHAN) Malacca

    Christine and Angie

Last Friday, 22nd to Sunday, 24th March, 2024 (3 day 2 night), I had the incredible opportunity to attend a transformative event at the Malaysian Hans Studies in Melaka. The "Ancient Teaching for Today's Challenges:
Home is where our journey begins"
course, led by Principal Song, was a profound exploration of traditional Chinese culture and its relevance in today's world.

Over the course of three days and two nights, participants delved into a variety of topics aimed at personal development, leadership growth, and community engagement. The primary objectives of the course were to empower individuals to build inner strength, become catalysts for positive change in their communities, and cultivate lasting connections with fellow participants.

     Teacher Song sharing core values

The workshop theme, "Home is where our journey begins," serves as a profound reminder that the quality of our society is a reflection of the quality of our homes. By synthesizing the domestic experience with the timeless wisdom of traditional Chinese culture, the event highlighted how personal character and communal health are inextricably linked.

Below is a comprehensive reflection on these themes.

The Home as the Cradle of Character

A nurturing home is more than a physical residence; it is the fundamental infrastructure for human development. When a home is built upon security and unconditional support, it provides the psychological safety required for individuals to explore their potential, build resilience, and develop a healthy, positive outlook on life.

This environment acts as the primary school for the human spirit:

  • The Foundation of Security: A stable, loving home allows individuals to move beyond survival and into growth, fostering the confidence necessary to navigate an unpredictable world.

  • The Crucible of Values: Within the family unit, abstract principles—integrity, responsibility, and kindness—are translated into daily practice. This "moral compass," forged in the home, becomes the lens through which individuals interact with the wider community.

  • The Culture of Connection: Beyond mere cohabitation, a healthy home prioritizes open communication and conflict resolution. By fostering an atmosphere where ideas are exchanged and emotions are respected, families create a microcosm of a harmonious society, teaching members how to contribute to, rather than withdraw from, the collective.

Bridging Tradition and Relationship

The event further deepened this understanding by exploring how the "Relationship" dynamics championed by traditional Chinese culture offer a blueprint for modern life. We examined how ancient wisdom provides a pathway to navigate contemporary challenges through five core virtues: Benevolence (Ren), Righteousness (Yi), Propriety (Li), Wisdom (Zhi), and Trustworthiness (Xin).

These five core virtues, collectively known as the Wǔcháng (五常), are represented by the following Chinese characters and Pinyin:

VirtueChinese Character (Traditional / Simplified)Pinyin
BenevolenceRén
Righteousness義 / 义
Propriety禮 / 礼
WisdomZhì
TrustworthinessXìn

Our exploration revealed that these virtues are not merely historical concepts but practical tools for engagement:

  • The Power of Virtue: By cultivating benevolence and righteousness, we learn to replace reactive behaviors with intentional empathy, allowing love to serve as a genuine force for alleviating suffering.

  • Holistic Wisdom: Traditional practices offer diverse pathways to inner peace and interpersonal harmony. We discovered that the study of Chinese characters offers philosophical insights into human nature, the practice of music can soothe the restless mind, and the observance of proper manners serves as a vital social lubricant, enabling respectful interactions.

  • Collaborative Learning: The interactive nature of the workshop reinforced that no one grows in a vacuum. By sharing insights and supporting one another’s understanding of these teachings, participants fostered a sense of camaraderie, illustrating that the very act of studying these values in a group is a practice of the values themselves.

"Home is where our journey begins" is an invitation to view our private lives as the starting point for public service. By anchoring our families in the values of compassion, wisdom, and open communication, we do more than nurture individuals; we build a resilient, harmonious community. The workshop underscored that whether through the lessons learned at the dinner table or the wisdom inherited from ancient tradition, we possess the tools to ensure every individual has the opportunity to flourish and contribute meaningfully to the world.

Xiao (孝) Team: From Left to Right: Carmen Lim, Chua, Angie Ng, Susan, Linda Tan, Lai Chin, Philip Kiew

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to network with local community leaders and catalysts, who shared their experiences and offered valuable guidance on leadership and community engagement. These interactions were incredibly inspiring and left a lasting impression on all attendees.

On the culminating day of our "Ways of Enriching Our Life" workshop, I was privileged to gain profound insights from Teacher Moey. He eloquently conveyed the essence of life's three primary seasons: morning, afternoon, and evening. Some individuals navigate these seasons driven by a passionate pursuit, while others are motivated solely by monetary gain.

Like clay upon a potter’s wheel, life’s turns may feel disorienting in the moment, but they are purposeful. Each rotation—every push and pull—is essential in shaping us into something refined, resilient, and deeply human.

Here is a summary of these seasons, viewed through the lens of grace and thanksgiving.

1. The Season of Foundation (Youth & Formation)
2. The Season of Cultivation (Adulthood & Midlife)
3. The Season of Refinement (The Golden Years)

Living in the Potter’s Hands

This is the morning of our lives, a time of wonder, discovery, and innocence. It is the beginning of the work, where the clay is first centered on the wheel.

  • The Metaphor: In this early rotation, life can feel fast and unstable. Yet, the wobbling is necessary to find the center. It is the potter’s initial touch that establishes the base upon which all future character will rest.

  • Grace and Thanksgiving: We offer thanks for the gift of potential—for the blank canvas, the protective love of our elders, and the boundless capacity to learn. We embrace this season with gratitude for the safety and guidance that allowed us to begin our journey.

This is the heat of the day, characterized by responsibility, striving, building, and the weight of roles—as professionals, partners, or parents.

  • The Metaphor: This is when the potter’s hand applies the firmest pressure. The wheel spins with intensity; we face the challenges of career, loss, and endurance. While the pressure may feel heavy and the friction intense, it is this very resistance that gives our vessel height, strength, and structural integrity.

  • Grace and Thanksgiving: We are thankful for the strength in our hands and the resolve in our hearts. We express gratitude for the opportunities to serve, to build a legacy, and to be tested. Even when we feel the strain of the "push and pull," we trust that we are being stretched into a vessel capable of holding more wisdom and compassion.

This is the sunset of our active toil, a time for introspection, legacy, and the harvesting of life's hard-won lessons.

  • The Metaphor: The wheel slows down, and the potter shifts from forming the structure to refining the surface. The rough edges of our youth and the heavy burdens of adulthood are smoothed away. What remains is the finished work—a vessel that is no longer being pushed, but polished, revealing the unique beauty of the life we have lived.

  • Grace and Thanksgiving: We approach this season with deep thanksgiving for the clarity of perspective and the quiet peace that follows the storm. We celebrate the beauty of what has been formed and the freedom to finally rest, confident that the imperfections of our journey have become the very markings that make us unique.

Teacher Philip Moey showcased his remarkable guitar skills alongside his captivating vocals.

Amongst the enriching discussions, Teacher Moey also delighted us with his latest masterpiece " The Muscial Soul Train: Discover the Song from Your Heart," which promises to guide readers on a journey of self-discovery through music and passion. In a captivating display of talent and passion, Teacher Moey shared his remarkable guitar skills and treated us to soul-stirring renditions of classic tunes, including "Country Road," "Top of the World," and "Chotto Matte Kudasai." Additionally, he shed light on the Japanese concept of "*ikigai," which has garnered global attention for its ability to infuse life with purpose and joy. This profound passion, as Teacher Moey explained, is instrumental in enhancing mental and physical well-being.

*Ikigai is generally written as 生きがい, a compound of the verb, 生きる (ikiru), and がい (gai). The kanji character , has multiple readings and meanings, but is generally associated with life or living things. The rest of the word is written with hiragana script, the basic syllabary of Japanese.

Ikigai is a Japanese term that blends two words: “iki” meaning “to live,” and “gai” meaning “reason,” which translates to “a reason to live.” It's a concept that encourages people to discover what truly matters to them and to live a life filled with purpose and joy.

Ikigai

Teacher Song, on the other hand, offered her unique perspective on life's four main seasons, presenting them as spring, summer, autumn, and winter. She intertwined her enrichment journey with her love for music, particularly in honing her piano skills. Through her experiences, Teacher Song emphasized the importance of embracing each season of life with grace and enthusiasm, finding enrichment and fulfillment in every phase.

Drawing from the profound teachings of Teacher Song, we learn that life is not merely a series of events to endure, but a masterpiece to be curated with gratitude. By adopting a posture of grace and thanksgiving, we recognize that every season—regardless of its challenges—is a deliberate act of artistry.

Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is a revolutionary masterpiece of program music, where each concerto captures the distinct narrative of nature—from the vibrancy of Spring to the icy stillness of Winter. Teacher Song parallels this with our human journey, suggesting our lives unfold in similar musical movements. Each phase—the energetic growth of youth, the intense labor of midlife, and the wisdom of our golden years—carries unique gifts and challenges. Just as Vivaldi composed nature’s distinct atmospheres, we are the composers of our own experience. By embracing this rhythmic progression, we find purpose, beauty, and grace in every rotation.

Teacher Song reminds us that the true secret to life is not in choosing the season, but in choosing our response to it. When we surrender to the rotation of the wheel, we stop fighting the discomfort of change and start appreciating the purpose of our shaping.

May we walk through each season not with resistance, but with a heart full of thanksgiving, recognizing that we are being prepared for a purpose greater than ourselves—refined, resilient, and ready to contribute to the world.

Furthermore, the entire workshop was underscored by the principles of "Di Zi Gui
(弟子規;)," an ancient Chinese text that serves as a guide to virtuous living. "Di Zi Gui," which translates to "Standards for Being a Good Student and Child," outlines the moral values and behaviors expected of individuals in Chinese society. Written by Li Yuxiu in the Qing dynasty, this influential text emphasizes filial piety, respect for elders, humility, and sincerity, among other virtues.

With roots in Confucian teachings, "Di Zi Gui" has been passed down through generations as a moral compass for personal conduct and societal harmony. Its enduring relevance speaks to its timeless wisdom and universal appeal, making it a cornerstone of traditional Chinese culture and a source of inspiration for individuals seeking to lead virtuous lives.

The workshop served as a beacon of enlightenment, offering invaluable wisdom on navigating life's seasons, finding fulfillment through passion and purpose, and embodying the timeless principles of "Di Zi Gui." The teachings of Teacher Moey and Teacher Song resonated deeply, inspiring us to embrace life's journey with optimism, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to personal enrichment.

Throughout the course, participants were encouraged to reflect on their own lives and consider how they could apply the lessons learned to their personal and professional endeavors. Whether it was through developing inner strength, embracing leadership roles, or fostering positive relationships within their communities, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and direction.

Overall, the Ancient Teaching for Today's Challenges course was a truly enriching experience that provided valuable insights into traditional Chinese culture and its relevance in addressing contemporary challenges. I left feeling inspired, empowered, and deeply grateful for the opportunity to embark on this journey of self-discovery at the Malaysian Han Studies..

As I reflect on my experience at the Malaysian Han Studies, I am reminded of the profound wisdom and timeless teachings that transcend cultural boundaries. The lessons learned during those three days have left an indelible mark on my journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

I am immensely grateful to Principal Song and the entire facilitators, namely Teacher Pang, Teacher Lee, Teacher Liew, Teacher Philip Moey, Teacher Felix Lam, Teacher Khoo, and etc., there are far too many to mention here, at the Malaysian Hans Studies for organizing such a transformative event. It is through initiatives like these that we can come together, learn from one another, and strive to create a better world for ourselves and future generations.

In conclusion, the Ancient Teaching for Today's Challenges: Home is where our journey begins, course was indeed a remarkable opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of traditional ancient Chinese culture and glean valuable insights for navigating the complexities of modern life. HOME IS WHERE OUR JOURNEY BEGINS

Home is where our journey begins,
In Mahan's embrace, where love wins.
Amidst the verdant hills so green,
A haven of beauty, a tranquil scene.

Here, hearts are warmed by fireside glow,
And laughter dances to and fro.
In Mahan's arms, we find our rest,
A sanctuary, truly blessed.

Through winding paths and winding lanes,
Our souls are bound in sweet refrains.
For here, in this enchanted place,
Memories bloom with boundless grace.

Home is where our spirits soar,
In Mahan's heart forevermore.
So let us cherish every day,
In this haven where dreams hold sway.

For Mahan is not just a place, you see,
It's where our hearts and souls run free.
And in its embrace, we'll always find,
The truest home for humankind.
