Celebrating Unity and Tradition: The Duan Wu Festival and Bak Zhong Distribution Campaign 2024

On Sunday, June 2nd, 2024, the Taman Bukit Community Hall, Melaka, buzzed with activity and excitement as community members gathered for the annual Duan Wu Festival and Bak Chang Distribution Campaign, celebrating the Duan Wu Festival 2024. Organized by YB Kerk Ayer Keroh, this event exemplified the spirit of togetherness and cultural heritage.

A Morning of Joyful Collaboration

Starting as early as 7:30 am, the community came together to prepare 1,500 Bak Zhong (also known as Zongzi) for distribution. The scene was a heartwarming display of teamwork and dedication, with volunteers of all ages participating in the preparation process. By 11:00 am, all the Bak Zhong were cooked and ready to be served to the community.

The event not only provided delicious food but also fostered a sense of unity and shared purpose. It was a joyous occasion that highlighted the importance of working together in peace and harmony.

A Glimpse into the History of Duan Wu Festival

The Duan Wu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, has a rich history that dates back over 2,000 years. It commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who, in despair over the corruption of his government, drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people, in an attempt to save him or at least recover his body, raced out in their boats and threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. This act of remembrance evolved into the Dragon Boat Festival and the tradition of making and eating Bak Zhong.

The Significance of the Duan Wu Festival

The Duan Wu Festival, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, is a time to honor Qu Yuan's spirit and celebrate Chinese cultural heritage. The festival is marked by dragon boat races, the eating of Bak Zhong, and various other festivities. It serves as a reminder of loyalty, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of the community.

Tips for Making Perfect Bak Zhong

Making Bak Zhong is an art that requires patience and skill. Here are a few tips for those who wish to try their hand at this traditional delicacy:

  1. Choose the Right Ingredients: Use glutinous rice, fresh bamboo leaves, and high-quality fillings such as pork, mushrooms, chestnuts, and salted egg yolks.
  2. Preparation of Bamboo Leaves: Soak the bamboo leaves overnight to soften them, and then boil them for a few minutes to ensure they are pliable and clean.
  3. Seasoning the Rice: Marinate the glutinous rice with soy sauce, oyster sauce, and other seasonings for enhanced flavor.
  4. Assembling the Bak Zhong: Carefully wrap the marinated rice and fillings in the bamboo leaves, ensuring they are tightly secured to prevent leakage during cooking.
  5. Cooking: Boil the wrapped Bak Zhong for several hours until fully cooked. The time may vary depending on the size and filling.

A Day of Celebration and Gratitude

The Bak Zhong Distribution Campaign was more than just a culinary event; it was a celebration of community spirit and cultural pride. We were honored to have a photography session with YB Kerk Ayer Keroh, YB Khoo, and representatives from various associations and donors. Their presence and contributions were greatly appreciated, making the event a resounding success.

As we reflect on this wonderful day, we are reminded of the joy and fulfillment that comes from working together in peace and harmony. Let us continue to celebrate our traditions and strengthen our community bonds in the years to come.

Ode to the Dragon Boat Festival

In the heart of summer's bloom,
When rivers gleam under the moon,
We gather to remember and to honor,
The legacy of Qu Yuan, a scholar.

Bamboo leaves in gentle hands,
Glutinous rice from fertile lands,
Wrapped with care, a family’s treasure,
Each Bak Zhong a token of pleasure.

Drums echo on the water's breast,
As dragon boats race with zest,
Oars slicing through the morning mist,
In a rhythmic dance, a joyous twist.

Colors bright, and spirits high,
Kites soaring in the sky,
The scent of incense, the sound of cheer,
Tradition's whisper, loud and clear.

A tale of loyalty and sorrow told,
In legends ancient and bold,
Yet in the present, it lives anew,
In every heart that beats true.

Families gather, hand in hand,
Together they work, together they stand,
In peace and joy, they find their way,
Celebrating this sacred day.

To the Dragon Boat Festival, we raise a toast,
To the culture and history we love the most,
In each Bak Zhong, a story we hold,
Of timeless values, brave and bold.

May this festival bring us close,
In bonds of love, we cherish most,
Rich in culture, steeped in grace,
In every heart, may it find its place.

Easter Gifts
In the vibrant city of Melaka, today, amidst the bustling streets and the rich tapestry of cultures, there exists a special night that holds significance not just for the Chinese community but for all who call this city home. The Dragon Lunar New Year marked not only the beginning of a new lunar cycle but also a celebration of friendship and unity between China and Melaka that spanned five decades. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the streets came alive with the energy of anticipation and excitement.

Visitors eagerly flooded the Jonker Walk Main Stage grounds as early as 5pm, showcasing their excitement for the event which was officiated by the Governor of Melaka, Yang di Pertua Negeri, Tun Dr. Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam. The air was thick with anticipation, and as the first notes of music filled the air, the crowd erupted into cheers, their faces illuminated by the warm glow of lanterns and the promise of a night filled with magic.

Chief Minister YB Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture secretary-general Datin Radiahtun Malkam, and state leaders joined in the festivities, participating in the Yee Sang ceremony symbolising luxury, wealth, happiness, and prosperity for the community. It was a moment of unity, as leaders from different walks of life came together to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Melaka and its enduring ties with China.

The stage was set, quite literally, at the Jonker Walk Main Stage grounds, where visitors from near and far eagerly gathered, their faces beaming with excitement for the festivities that awaited them. It was a night unlike any other, a night where tradition met modernity, and where cultures intertwined in a harmonious celebration.

Among the highlights were the Traditional Chinese Orchestra by the Melaka Teo Chew Association, Peranakan sketches, the 24 Seasons Drums, and wushu performances. These performances added a touch of cultural richness and diversity to the evening, showcasing the vibrant tapestry of traditions that make up the fabric of Melaka.

The celebration, embracing a hawker-friendly concept with 323 vendors, was heightened by the state government’s provision of RM15 food vouchers to the first 10,000 patrons along Jonker Walk. This gesture not only added to the festive atmosphere but also ensured that everyone, regardless of background, could partake in the joyous occasion.

The guest list read like a who's who of Melaka's esteemed personalities, with Members of Parliament Kota Melaka, YB Datuk Khoo, Ayer Keroh MP, YB Kerk, YB Datuk Alex Seah, and YB Leng Chau Yen gracing the occasion with their presence. But it wasn't just politicians who added sparkle to the evening; esteemed artists Yuki Low and Vince Chong regaled the audience with their enchanting performances. Yuki Low's rendition of "Kenangan Terindah" tugged at heartstrings, while Vince Chong's spirited rendition of "Gong Xi Fatt Chai" had everyone tapping their feet in rhythm.

As the night unfolded, it became evident that this was more than just a celebration; it was a testament to the enduring friendship between China and Melaka. The 50-year milestone was commemorated with pride and joy, as the two cultures came together to revel in each other's company. The Yee Sang ceremony, symbolizing prosperity and abundance, was a poignant reminder of the shared values of hope and renewal that bind us all together.

But beyond the glitz and glamour, the Dragon Lunar New Year celebration was a time for reflection and gratitude. It was a time to honor the sacrifices of our forefathers and to celebrate the diversity that makes Melaka truly unique. It was a time to come together as a community, to laugh, to dance, and to create cherished memories that would last a lifetime.

As the night drew to a close and the last echoes of laughter faded into the night, one thing was clear: the Dragon Lunar New Year 2024 had been a resounding success. It had brought people together in a spirit of unity and camaraderie, reaffirming the bonds of friendship that have stood the test of time. In every heart, may hope ignite,

On this Dragon Lunar New Year night,

May blessings abound, shining ever bright.

Under lanterns' glow, 'neath moon's soft gaze,

Memories woven in Lunar New Year's haze.

As laughter fades, and melodies take flight,

Let's cherish unity, warmth, and light.

For in this celebration, cultures blend,

Essence of humanity, a message to send.

Friendship enduring, through trials grand,

Hand in hand, we'll always stand.

As Dragon bids farewell, new beginnings brew,

Gratitude guides, in all we pursue.

Bring hope, joy, and blessings dear.

With voices raised, in joyful strain,

Memories cherished, friendships gained.

In time's embrace, let this night be,

A treasured chapter in history's sea.

Gong Xi Fa Cai, to one and all,

May blessings upon us endlessly fall.

In unity's embrace, may we stand tall,

Happy Dragon Lunar New Year, hear joy's call !

Poem on "Bak Chang":

Wrapped in bamboo leaves, a savory surprise,

Bak Chang's aroma fills the skies.

Steamed with care, a culinary delight,

Each bite transports us to a taste bud's flight.

Glutinous rice, a tender embrace,

Enveloped by flavors, a symphony of taste.

Meat and spices, a harmonious blend,

With every morsel, memories descend.

Generations past, their hands at play,

Preserving traditions, a timeless array.

A gift of love, from ancestors old,

The tales they tell, in each fold.

From kitchen hearths to dining tables,

A treasure shared, a family fable.

With nimble fingers, the art unfurls,

Crafting parcels, their stories twirls.

Oh, Bak Chang, a culinary treasure,

A symbol of heritage, a taste to measure.

In every bite, we savor the past,

A connection to roots that forever last.

Bak Chang's  Ingredients, Meat, Mushroom, Chestnut, White bean, and Rice with Spices.

Poem on "Bian Mian" (Changing Face):

Masks of mystery, a captivating dance,

Bian Mian, enchanting us at a glance.

Faces concealed, a secret to behold,

In rapid succession, stories unfold.

With a swift flick, colors transform,

Emotions hidden, behind each norm.

Expressions change, like the shifting tide,

A mesmerizing performance, a wondrous ride.

Bian Mian, a glimpse into the soul,

Embodying characters, each with a role.

A master's skill, an artistry profound,

Faces changing, without a sound.

Through layers and layers, emotions unveil,

The mask's allure, a tale to prevail.

In fluid motion, the masks express,

A tapestry of emotions, no words can impress.

Lions Dance and Traditional Chinese Cultural Carnival 2023:

Amidst cheers and drums, the lions prance,

In rhythmic harmony, they commence.

Their mighty roars echo far and wide,

Awakening spirits, filling us with pride.

With vibrant colors, they come alive,

Symbols of luck, blessings they derive.

Graceful movements, a spectacle to see,

Unifying hearts, a spirit wild and free.

In the Traditional Chinese Cultural Carnival's embrace,

Diverse traditions find their rightful place.

A tapestry woven, of heritage and art,

We celebrate unity, with every part.

From Bak Chang's embrace to Bian Mian's grace,

And the Lions Dance's powerful chase,

We honor the past and embrace the new,

Cultural unity, a cherished value we pursue.

In this grand celebration, together we stand,

United by culture, hand in hand.

With gratitude and joy, our hearts do swell,

For the richness of traditions, we proudly tell.

The 2023 International Chinese Culture Day,

A day of unity, where memories will stay.

We thank our leaders, contributors, and more,

For a celebration that our hearts adore.

May the spirit of cultural appreciation live on,

In the hearts of many, from dusk till dawn.

Let us continue to cherish and embrace,

The beauty of diversity, with love and grace.
