Last week, Friday, 22nd -  Sunday, 24th March (3 day 2 night),I had the incredible opportunity to attend a transformative event at the Malaysian Hans Studies in Melaka. The "Ancient Teaching for Today's Challenges: Home is where our journey begins" course, led by Principal Song, was a profound exploration of traditional Chinese culture and its relevance in today's world.

Over the course of three days and two nights, participants delved into a variety of topics aimed at personal development, leadership growth, and community engagement. The primary objectives of the course were to empower individuals to build inner strength, become catalysts for positive change in their communities, and cultivate lasting connections with fellow participants.

The theme of the workshop, "Home is where our journey begins," underscores the fundamental importance of a happy and nurturing home environment in shaping individuals and communities. Indeed, a happy home serves as the cornerstone of a healthy and thriving community, impacting various aspects of individuals' lives and society as a whole.

First and foremost, a happy home provides a sense of security and stability for its inhabitants. It is within the walls of a loving and supportive home that individuals feel safe to explore, learn, and grow. This sense of security lays the foundation for healthy development, fostering confidence, resilience, and a positive outlook on life.

Furthermore, a happy home nurtures strong and meaningful relationships among family members. It is a place where bonds are forged, memories are created, and love is shared unconditionally. These close familial ties not only contribute to individual well-being but also strengthen the fabric of the community by promoting empathy, compassion, and unity.

Moreover, a happy home instills important values and principles in its residents, serving as a moral compass for navigating life's challenges. From simple acts of kindness and respect to more complex concepts of integrity and responsibility, the lessons learned within the home shape individuals' character and influence their interactions with others in the community.

Additionally, a happy home fosters a culture of communication, openness, and support. It is a space where ideas are exchanged, opinions are valued, and conflicts are resolved constructively. By promoting healthy communication patterns and fostering a sense of belonging, happy homes contribute to the overall well-being and cohesion of the community.

In essence, the theme "Home is where our journey begins" highlights the profound impact of a happy and nurturing home environment on individual and community health. By prioritizing the creation and maintenance of happy homes, we can lay the groundwork for a more harmonious, resilient, and thriving society, where every individual has the opportunity to flourish and contribute positively to the community.

Another essential element of the event was the importance of "Relationship" in traditional Chinese culture. Through discussions and activities, we explored the essential teachings of ancient Chinese culture, including the significance of education, the power of love to alleviate suffering, and the universal core values of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness.

We also had the opportunity to learn about the wisdom hidden within Chinese characters, the role of music in bringing peace to our minds, and the importance of good manners in navigating life's challenges. Additionally, interactive discussion groups provided a platform for participants to share their thoughts and insights, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual support.

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to network with local community leaders and catalysts, who shared their experiences and offered valuable guidance on leadership and community engagement. These interactions were incredibly inspiring and left a lasting impression on all attendees.

On the culminating day of our "Ways of Enriching Our Life" workshop, I was privileged to gain profound insights from Teacher Moey. He eloquently conveyed the essence of life's three primary seasons: morning, afternoon, and evening. Some individuals navigate these seasons driven by a passionate pursuit, while others are motivated solely by monetary gain.

Teacher Philip Moey showcased his remarkable guitar skills alongside his captivating vocals.

Amongst the enriching discussions, Teacher Moey also delighted us with his latest masterpiece " The Muscial Soul Train: Discover the Song from Your Heart," which promises to guide readers on a journey of self-discovery through music and passion. In a captivating display of talent and passion, Teacher Moey shared his remarkable guitar skills and treated us to soul-stirring renditions of classic tunes, including "Country Road," "Top of the World," and "Chotto Matte Kudasai." Additionally, he shed light on the Japanese concept of "*ikigai," which has garnered global attention for its ability to infuse life with purpose and joy. This profound passion, as Teacher Moey explained, is instrumental in enhancing mental and physical well-being.

*Ikigai is generally written as 生きがい, a compound of the verb, 生きる (ikiru), and がい (gai). The kanji character 生, has multiple readings and meanings, but is generally associated with life or living things. The rest of the word is written with hiragana script, the basic syllabary of Japanese. 

Ikigai is a Japanese term that blends two words: “iki” meaning “to live,” and “gai” meaning “reason,” which translates to “a reason to live.” It's a concept that encourages people to discover what truly matters to them and to live a life filled with purpose and joy.

Teacher Song, on the other hand, offered her unique perspective on life's four main seasons, presenting them as spring, summer, autumn, and winter. She intertwined her enrichment journey with her love for music, particularly in honing her piano skills. Through her experiences, Teacher Song emphasized the importance of embracing each season of life with grace and enthusiasm, finding enrichment and fulfillment in every phase.

Furthermore, the entire workshop was underscored by the principles of "Di Zi Gui
(弟子規;)," an ancient Chinese text that serves as a guide to virtuous living. "Di Zi Gui," which translates to "Standards for Being a Good Student and Child," outlines the moral values and behaviors expected of individuals in Chinese society. Written by Li Yuxiu in the Qing dynasty, this influential text emphasizes filial piety, respect for elders, humility, and sincerity, among other virtues.

With roots in Confucian teachings, "Di Zi Gui" has been passed down through generations as a moral compass for personal conduct and societal harmony. Its enduring relevance speaks to its timeless wisdom and universal appeal, making it a cornerstone of traditional Chinese culture and a source of inspiration for individuals seeking to lead virtuous lives.

The workshop served as a beacon of enlightenment, offering invaluable wisdom on navigating life's seasons, finding fulfillment through passion and purpose, and embodying the timeless principles of "Di Zi Gui." The teachings of Teacher Moey and Teacher Song resonated deeply, inspiring us to embrace life's journey with optimism, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to personal enrichment.

Throughout the course, participants were encouraged to reflect on their own lives and consider how they could apply the lessons learned to their personal and professional endeavors. Whether it was through developing inner strength, embracing leadership roles, or fostering positive relationships within their communities, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and direction.

Overall, the Ancient Teaching for Today's Challenges course was a truly enriching experience that provided valuable insights into traditional Chinese culture and its relevance in addressing contemporary challenges. I left feeling inspired, empowered, and deeply grateful for the opportunity to embark on this journey of self-discovery at the Malaysian Han Studies..

The event provided a unique platform for individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together and explore shared values and aspirations. Principal Song's guidance and expertise were instrumental in facilitating meaningful discussions and fostering a supportive learning environment.

As I reflect on my experience at the Malaysian Han Studies, I am reminded of the profound wisdom and timeless teachings that transcend cultural boundaries. The lessons learned during those three days have left an indelible mark on my journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

I am immensely grateful to Principal Song and the entire facilitators, namely Teacher Pang, Teacher Lee, Teacher Liew, Teacher Philip Moey, Teacher Felix Lam, Teacher Khoo, and etc., there are far too many to mention here, at the Malaysian Hans Studies for organizing such a transformative event. It is through initiatives like these that we can come together, learn from one another, and strive to create a better world for ourselves and future generations.

In conclusion, the Ancient Teaching for Today's Challenges: Home is where our journey begins, course was indeed a remarkable opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of traditional ancient Chinese culture and glean valuable insights for navigating the complexities of modern life. I aspire and look forward to applying what I have learned and continuing my journey of growth and self-discovery with renewed purpose and determination.

Thursday, 22nd Feb : A Glorious Celebration: Dragon Lunar New Year 2024

In the vibrant city of Melaka,today, amidst the bustling streets and the rich tapestry of cultures, there exists a special night that holds significance not just for the Chinese community but for all who call this city home. The Dragon Lunar New Year marked not only the beginning of a new lunar cycle but also a celebration of friendship and unity between China and Melaka that spanned five decades. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the streets came alive with the energy of anticipation and excitement.

Visitors eagerly flooded the Jonker Walk Main Stage grounds as early as 5pm, showcasing their excitement for the event which was officiated by the Governor of Melaka, Yang di Pertua Negeri, Tun Dr. Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam. The air was thick with anticipation, and as the first notes of music filled the air, the crowd erupted into cheers, their faces illuminated by the warm glow of lanterns and the promise of a night filled with magic.

Chief Minister YB Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture secretary-general Datin Radiahtun Malkam, and state leaders joined in the festivities, participating in the Yee Sang ceremony symbolising luxury, wealth, happiness, and prosperity for the community. It was a moment of unity, as leaders from different walks of life came together to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Melaka and its enduring ties with China.

The stage was set, quite literally, at the Jonker Walk Main Stage grounds, where visitors from near and far eagerly gathered, their faces beaming with excitement for the festivities that awaited them. It was a night unlike any other, a night where tradition met modernity, and where cultures intertwined in a harmonious celebration.

Among the highlights were the Traditional Chinese Orchestra by the Melaka Teo Chew Association, Peranakan sketches, the 24 Seasons Drums, and wushu performances. These performances added a touch of cultural richness and diversity to the evening, showcasing the vibrant tapestry of traditions that make up the fabric of Melaka.

The celebration, embracing a hawker-friendly concept with 323 vendors, was heightened by the state government’s provision of RM15 food vouchers to the first 10,000 patrons along Jonker Walk. This gesture not only added to the festive atmosphere but also ensured that everyone, regardless of background, could partake in the joyous occasion.

The guest list read like a who's who of Melaka's esteemed personalities, with Members of Parliament Kota Melaka, YB Datuk Khoo, Ayer Keroh MP, YB Kerk, YB Datuk Alex Seah, and YB Leng Chau Yen gracing the occasion with their presence. But it wasn't just politicians who added sparkle to the evening; esteemed artists Yuki Low and Vince Chong regaled the audience with their enchanting performances. Yuki Low's rendition of "Kenangan Terindah" tugged at heartstrings, while Vince Chong's spirited rendition of "Gong Xi Fatt Chai" had everyone tapping their feet in rhythm.

As the night unfolded, it became evident that this was more than just a celebration; it was a testament to the enduring friendship between China and Melaka. The 50-year milestone was commemorated with pride and joy, as the two cultures came together to revel in each other's company. The Yee Sang ceremony, symbolizing prosperity and abundance, was a poignant reminder of the shared values of hope and renewal that bind us all together.

But beyond the glitz and glamour, the Dragon Lunar New Year celebration was a time for reflection and gratitude. It was a time to honor the sacrifices of our forefathers and to celebrate the diversity that makes Melaka truly unique. It was a time to come together as a community, to laugh, to dance, and to create cherished memories that would last a lifetime.

As the night drew to a close and the last echoes of laughter faded into the night, one thing was clear: the Dragon Lunar New Year 2024 had been a resounding success. It had brought people together in a spirit of unity and camaraderie, reaffirming the bonds of friendship that have stood the test of time. And as we bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, let us carry forward the spirit of this special night, remembering always the joy of celebration and the power of unity. Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Last Sunday, 21st Jan, 2024, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure that transcended the ordinary – a cruise aboard the luxurious Genting Dream Cruise, setting sail from Singapore to Port Klang and Phuket Patong. What made this journey even more special was the company of my sister, Yong, and two dear friends, Sherry Lim and Christine Ho. For Christine and Sherry, it was a maiden voyage into the world of cruising, and what a voyage it was!

A Balcony Room Extravaganza:

As the ship gracefully departed from Singapore, we eagerly made our way to our balcony room. For Christine, Sherry, and me, this marked our first time experiencing the luxury of a balcony room on a cruise. The anticipation was palpable as we stepped into our haven at sea. The room was not just a place to rest; it was a sanctuary that opened up to the vast expanse of the ocean. The beauty of the sea unfolding before our eyes was a mesmerizing panorama that made each moment aboard the Genting Dream Cruise truly magical.

The Grandeur of Genting Dream:

The Genting Dream Cruise liner is a floating marvel, a colossal beauty on the open sea. Its sheer size is awe-inspiring, providing ample space for every imaginable pleasure. From the moment we stepped on board, we were greeted by an atmosphere of opulence and grandeur. The ship's architecture and design were not just functional but a feast for the eyes. Each corner held the promise of new discoveries, new adventures. 

Bonding Over  Workshops, Tea and Laughter:

The Sunday evening, as our Genting Dream Cruise journey unfolded, we were treated to the enchanting 'Love Matters" variety show—an event that resonated deeply with its poignant message about the enduring power of love. Drawing inspiration from the timeless wisdom of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, the show beautifully encapsulated the essence of love, portraying its ability to bear, believe, hope, and endure in the face of all things.

On the third evening of our cruise, the 'Affinity" Acrobatic show took center stage, captivating our senses with its enthralling performances. The acrobats showcased not only their extraordinary skills but also delivered a spectacular and awe-inspiring experience, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to witness their talents.

As our cruise journey neared its end, we were treated to yet another delightful surprise—a screening of the movie 'Shang-Chi' by none other than our esteemed Datuk Michelle Yeoh. Her curated movie night provided the perfect conclusion to our seafaring adventure, adding a touch of cinematic magic to an already unforgettable experience.

As our voyage on the Genting Dream Cruise continued, we discovered another delightful dimension of connection and creativity on the 2nd afternoon—the Gel Lamp workshop. Engaging in the art of lantern crafting not only illuminated our surroundings but also kindled a sense of togetherness among fellow cruisers.

During this hands-on experience, we embraced the opportunity to craft our own Gel Lamps, guided by skilled artisans who shared their expertise and enthusiasm. The Gel Lamp workshop proved to be more than just a craft session; it became a shared journey of exploration and bonding. As the warm glow of our handcrafted lamps flickered to life, it mirrored the connections we forged during this unforgettable cruise. It was a testament to the cruise's commitment to creating moments of joy, togetherness, and shared experiences for all aboard.

In the midst of this maritime paradise, we found joy in the simplest moments. Sipping tea on the balcony became a cherished ritual, a time when conversations flowed freely, and laughter echoed across the open sea. The bond between us grew stronger as we shared stories, dreams, and the sheer joy of being in such a remarkable setting together.

The culinary delights on the Genting Dream Cruise were nothing short of a symphony for the taste buds. The ship hosted a culinary journey that catered to every palate. From exquisite meals to an array of scrumptious desserts, every dining experience was a celebration. We found ourselves indulging in a culinary odyssey, savoring the diverse flavors that the cruise had to offer.

Each day, we indulged in a symphony of flavors at the onboard restaurants, savoring gourmet creations prepared by skilled chefs. Whether it was a delightful seafood feast, a succulent steak, or an array of international cuisines, every meal was a culinary journey in itself.
