Nurturing Health for a Vibrant Community Together:

2023 World Diabetes Day Commemoration in Jonker Walk, Teo Chew Hui Kuan, Melaka.

In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2023, a significant Health Activities event took center stage at Jonker Walk, Teo Chew Hui Kuan, early this morning at 7.30am, Friday, 15th Dec, 2023, spearheaded by the Clinic at Jalan Gereja Melaka under the leadership of Dr. Noor Aizam bin Mohd Said. The event, designed to promote holistic health, included essential health checks, exercise sessions, and enlightening talks to raise awareness about the importance of preventive healthcare.

Registration

The day began with a thorough 3-point health check that involved the measurement of height and weight. Participants were then guided through invigorating exercises and aerobics, reinforcing the message of an active lifestyle as a foundation for well-being.

Ready to burn fat and calories...

The insightful health talks proved to be a highlight of the event. Dr. Naz, in her presentation on "Aging Gracefully," shed light on a crucial demographic shift. By the year 2030, Malaysia is projected to become a graying country, with approximately 50% of the population falling into the elderly* group. This revelation emphasized the urgency of prioritizing health initiatives and care for our aging community.

Ms. Lee, a pharmacist, shared valuable insights on medication management, stressing the importance of proper storage and administration. The emphasis on this aspect of healthcare contributes significantly to the overall well-being of individuals, especially those dealing with chronic conditions like diabetes.

In summary, the significant changes in the 2020 Malaysian Food Pyramid focus on promoting a healthy and balanced diet. Here's an explanation, starting from the lowest or level 1, which represents the
most consumed quantity:

Level 1: Vegetables/Fruits (Base of the Pyramid)
In contrast to the 2010 Malaysian Food Pyramid, the vegetable and fruit group is now placed at the base of the pyramid, replacing carbohydrate sources such as rice, noodles, bread, grains, grain products, and tubers.
This signifies that vegetables and fruits should be consumed in larger quantities, with a recommendation of at least 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits daily.
Fruits and vegetables not only add flavor to meals but also serve as primary sources of essential vitamins and minerals crucial for boosting the body's ability to fight diseases.

Level 2: Carbohydrates (Second Tier)
Carbohydrate-rich foods, like rice and bread, are positioned on the second tier of the pyramid.
The 2020 Malaysian Food Pyramid suggests a lower percentage range for carbohydrate intake, specifically 50-65%, compared to the 2010 pyramid, which had a broader range of 55-75% of total daily energy intake.
The emphasis is on the intake of complex carbohydrates and high-fiber sources, such as brown rice, whole grain bread, oats, and corn, providing healthier options to meet energy requirements.

Level 3: Water Intake (Recommendation of 6-8 Glasses)
The recommendation for consuming 6-8 glasses of plain water per day is highlighted in the illustration of the 2020 Malaysian Food Pyramid.
Adequate water intake ensures the body stays hydrated, especially in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The utilization of the 2020 Malaysian Food Pyramid is hoped to assist Malaysians in adopting a healthy diet every day. Through a clear understanding of this pyramid, individuals can maintain their health and reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Public awareness of healthy eating is crucial to ensure a higher quality of life and protection against the threat of diseases.

The event also featured an engaging activity—a puzzle-solving session on the Food Pyramid 2020. Each group leader provided a brief explanation, ensuring that participants understood the significance of a balanced diet in enhancing their lives.

As we reflect on this commemorative event, it serves as a reminder that prevention is indeed better than cure. Dr. Naz's revelation about Malaysia's demographic shift reinforces the critical need for preventive healthcare, particularly in the context of diabetes and other chronic illnesses.

Note: * elderly is those above 60

Last 14th of November, we observed World Diabetes Day, an annual commemoration that coincides with the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, the co-discoverer of insulin alongside Charles Best in 1922. Since 1991, this day has served as a global response to the increasing health concerns posed by diabetes.

The statistics regarding diabetes are sobering:

  • In 2019, 1 in 11 adults lived with diabetes.
  • The projected number of people living with diabetes is expected to reach 578 million by 2030.
  • Alarmingly, 1 in 2 adults with diabetes remains undiagnosed, totaling 232 million individuals.
  • Diabetes claimed 4.2 million lives in 2019.

The World Health Organization underscores the severe complications that untreated diabetes can lead to, including heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidney failure, and lower limb amputation. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in preventing such life-threatening outcomes.

Recognizing the importance of early intervention and in light of the association between type 1 diabetes mellitus and HLA-DQ genes, BDR-Blackhills Diagnostic Resources presents the Genvinset HLA Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 kit. This diagnostic resource aims to facilitate timely and accurate identification, allowing for proactive measures to manage and mitigate the impact of diabetes. In a world where diabetes poses a significant health challenge, staying informed and taking preventative actions are key steps towards a healthier future.

Creating awareness within our community is paramount to prevent and curb the prevalence of diabetes and other critical illnesses. Health is undeniably true wealth, and by actively participating in events like these, we collectively take strides toward building a healthier, more resilient community. Let this event be a catalyst for ongoing efforts to prioritize health, fostering a culture of well-being for generations to come.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple's 350th Anniversary: A Reverence for Tradition, Culture, and Heritage

 Introduction:

Nestled in the heart of Malacca, Malaysia, the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple stands as an embodiment of history, culture, and tradition. As it prepares to celebrate its grand 350th anniversary in 2023, this revered temple serves as a living testament to the past. This momentous celebration not only honors the enduring vitality of tradition and culture but also highlights the temple's historical architecture, its unwavering commitment to preserving ancient techniques, and its pivotal role within the local community. Awarded the prestigious UNESCO accolade for outstanding architectural restoration in 2003, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple stands as Malaysia's oldest and most esteemed place of worship, attracting visitors and devotees from across the globe.

The History of Cheng Hoon Teng Temple:

The chronicle of Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is a captivating odyssey through time, tracing its roots back to the Dutch colonial era in Malacca. Founded in 1643 by the esteemed Chinese Kapitans Tay Kie Ki and Tay Hong Yong, the exact construction date has been a subject of scholarly debate. Within the temple's walls, inscriptions hint at its existence as early as the 15th century, during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli Reign period, potentially dating its establishment to well before the widely accepted founding year.

The temple's architectural magnificence is a living tribute to ancient building methods. The entire edifice was meticulously constructed without the use of a single nail, showcasing the precision and craftsmanship of the artisans behind this remarkable feat. Its design is adorned with intricate carvings, ornate wooden beams, and a roof resplendent with colorful ceramic figurines narrating tales from Chinese mythology and history. The temple's design adheres to the principles of feng shui, ensuring harmony and equilibrium in its structure.

Throughout the ages, the temple has seen the addition of further structures. In 1673, Kapitan Li Wei King Koon Chang led the construction efforts, importing materials from China. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple has long been the primary center of worship for the local Hoklo (Hokkien) community.

Noteworthy developments include the construction of a main hall in 1704 under the patronage of Kapitan Chan Ki Lock and renovations in 1801, orchestrated by Kapitan Chua Su Cheong Tok Ping. The latter enhancements added supplementary structures, further enhancing the temple's architectural allure.

The temple's global prominence was sealed in 1962 when then-abbot Seck Kim Seng ordained Houn Jiyu-Kennett, a Zen nun from England who would go on to establish the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives. This historic event marked the temple's global reach and its role in disseminating Buddhist teachings.

Illuminating Friendship and Tradition: 2023 Lantern Festival A Night to Remember

On a breezy and bright evening of September 28th, 2023, something truly remarkable unfolded as the full moon graced the night sky. My friends, Sheila Ho, Felicia, and I embarked on a journey to celebrate the Lantern Festival at the Lucky Palace Restaurant, hosted by YB Kerk. From 6:30 pm till late into the night, we immersed ourselves in the magic of lanterns, friendship, and tradition. This auspicious and memorable night left an indelible mark on our hearts, and I am delighted to recount our experience.

A Night of Brightness

As we gathered at the Lucky Palace Restaurant, a sense of anticipation hung in the air. We were greeted by a bright and windy night, a perfect backdrop for the Lantern Festival. The cool breeze whispered tales of adventure, and the radiant moon cast a gentle glow upon our path. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect evening to celebrate this cherished tradition.

The Festival Commences

The Lantern Festival is more than just a cultural event; it's a celebration of unity, family, and hope. It was heartwarming to see people from all walks of life coming together to partake in this meaningful occasion. The festival commenced with a simple Lantern Festival wish, a heartfelt invocation of blessings for the full moon, and a symbol of our collective hopes and dreams.

The night's enchantment continued with a solo harmonica performance that filled the air with melodious tunes. The harmonica's soulful notes seemed to resonate with the joyous spirit of the festival, creating a symphony of emotions that washed over the attendees. It was a moment of pure bliss that set the stage for an unforgettable evening.

DIY Lantern Kits: Crafting Memories

One of the most delightful surprises of the evening was the DIY Lantern Kits that were given to each attendee. These kits contained all the materials necessary to create our very own lanterns, measuring about ten inches in diameter. The lanterns came in a wide variety of colors, allowing us to unleash our creativity and customize our lanterns as we saw fit.

Gathered around a table with our DIY kits in hand, Sheila, Felicia, and I embarked on a crafting adventure. With nimble fingers, we carefully assembled our lanterns, choosing colors and patterns that resonated with us. It was a bonding experience that brought us closer together and allowed us to connect with the festival on a more intimate level.

DIY Lantern crafting at the Lantern Festival proved to be a delightful activity that transcended generational boundaries. It was a heartwarming testament to the fact that creativity and the joy of crafting know no age limits.

The DIY Lantern kits, provided to all attendees, were not only eagerly embraced by the young but also found in the hands of the elderly. In fact, this activity became a bridge between generations, fostering a sense of togetherness and intergenerational bonding.

For the young, the DIY Lantern kits offered an opportunity to unleash their imagination. They reveled in choosing vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and crafting lanterns that reflected their youthful exuberance. It was a chance for them to express their creativity and create tangible works of art, filling them with a sense of accomplishment.

On the other hand, the older participants found solace and joy in the simplicity of lantern-making. They demonstrated their wisdom and patience as they delicately assembled lanterns, often sharing stories and traditional techniques passed down through generations. For them, crafting lanterns was not just a creative endeavor but a nostalgic journey through time, rekindling cherished memories of their own Lantern Festival experiences in years gone by.

The shared experience of crafting lanterns bridged the generation gap, allowing the young and old to connect on a deeper level. It was a reminder that the joy of creating, bonding, and celebrating traditions is ageless and timeless. In those moments of crafting, age was merely a number, and the lanterns became symbols of shared memories and the enduring spirit of the Lantern Festival.

The Lanterns and Photography Competitions

As the evening progressed, our attention turned to the mesmerizing array of lanterns that adorned the Lucky Palace Restaurant. Lanterns of all shapes and sizes illuminated the night with their radiant glow. From traditional red lanterns to modern and artistic designs, each one told a story.

The photography competitions added an exciting element to the festival. Enthusiastic photographers roamed the venue, capturing the essence of the lanterns, the camaraderie among attendees, and the overall ambiance. It was a visual feast, with each click of the camera preserving the magic of the night for posterity.

A Simple Culinary

A celebration is incomplete without a feast, and the Lantern Festival did not disappoint in this regard. The Lucky Palace Restaurant treated us to a sumptuous spread of Chinese delicacies that tantalized our taste buds. From savory mixed brocolli and carrot vegetable to crispy moon cakes and succulent chicken curry, the menu was a gastronomic delight.

The fragrant orange juice and soda served as the perfect complement to the meal, cleansing our palates and enhancing the flavors of each dish. The food was not just nourishment for our bodies; it was a sensory experience that elevated the evening's festivities.

A Night to Remember

As the night wore on, the lanterns continued to cast their enchanting glow, and the harmonica's melodies wafted through the air. Laughter and conversation flowed freely, creating an atmosphere of warmth and togetherness. It was a night that reminded us of the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones and celebrating life's simple joys.

The significance of the full moon and the lanterns illuminated more than just the physical space; they illuminated our hearts with hope and happiness. Each lantern, whether store-bought or crafted with our own hands, represented a dream, a wish, or a prayer. As we held our lanterns into the night sky, we couldn't help but feel connected to the thousands of others doing the same, all across the world.

The Lantern Festival at the Lucky Palace Restaurant, hosted by YB Kerk, on the auspicious night of September 28th, 2023, was a celebration that will forever hold a special place in our hearts. It was a night of illumination in every sense, where we basked in the glow of lanterns, the harmony of music, and the warmth of friendship.

As we left the festival that night, we carried with us not only the memories of a wonderful evening but also the spirit of unity and hope that the Lantern Festival embodies. The full moon smiled down upon us, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, there is always light to guide us, and there are always friends to share our journey.

In the end, it was a night of joy and love, a night that allowed us to appreciate the beauty of traditions and the power of coming together to celebrate life. The Lantern Festival of 2023 was truly a night to remember, and we look forward to the next one with hearts full of anticipation and gratitude.

On a breezy eve in twenty-twenty-three,

Under the full moon's radiant decree,

With friends by my side, we gathered to see,

The Lantern Festival's grand jubilee.

In the Lucky Palace Restaurant's embrace,

Anticipation danced upon each face,

A night of tradition and friendship to chase,

In the glow of lanterns, we'd find our grace.

The festival began with a heartfelt plea,

For blessings and dreams, under the moon's decree,

A harmonica's melody set hearts free,

A symphony of emotions, pure jubilee.

DIY Lantern Kits, a creative decree,

Colors and patterns, for all to decree,

A crafting adventure, bonded we'd be,

Closer together, our spirits set free.

Lanterns of all shapes adorned the space,

Traditional red and modern, in their place,

Photographers' clicks, memories to embrace,

In visual splendor, the night's grace.

A culinary extravaganza we'd embrace,

Chinese delicacies, a sumptuous embrace,

Our taste buds danced in this culinary chase,

An edible journey, a heavenly place.

As night wore on, lanterns cast their light,

Harmonica's melodies took flight,

Laughter and conversation, pure delight,

Cherishing moments, throughout the night.

The full moon and lanterns, their magical flight,

Illuminated our hearts, with hope so bright,

Each lantern a dream, a wish, a sight,

Connected to others, under the same moonlight.

In conclusion, a night we'll forever embrace,

With memories of joy, in our heart's grace,

Unity and hope, we'll never erase,

A night of illumination, in every embrace.

The Lantern Festival of twenty-twenty-three,

A night of lanterns and light, as you can see,

Tradition and friendship, in harmony,

A night to remember, in our hearts, forever free.
